India Inc makes room for women

While banking and IT have become the favourite haunt for women, retail and automobile are still a far cry.

NEW DELHI: What if the wall is still intact, the glass ceiling is giving away. Barring the construction and manufacturing sectors, women are increasingly taking over corporate functions that were once considered to be male bastions.

Sure, some are even heading their own business units. Subex Azure’s newly-appointed CFO is Sudha Madhavan, Walt Disney’s director for consumer products is Roshni Bakshi, General Motor’s head of marketing is Anisha Motwani, and Godfrey Philips’ marketing director is Nita Kapoor. Similarly, Sudipta Sengupta heads sales and marketing at Nirula’s and Manaz Nobel is Cadbury India’s company secretary and head of financial planning. Likewise, Neeti Chopra heads marketing at Westside.

HUL has Richa Puranesh as head of marketing for the skincare division and Priya Nair for premium fabric wash. Those who head companies include Gagan Singh, MD of Benetton India, and Padma Ravichander, head of Perot Systems.

While banking and IT have become the favourite haunt for women, retail and automobile are still a far cry for them.
