Vision, clear thinking and a cool head, Dhoni showed great leadership traits in abundance all through the tournament. The outcome of the matches didn’t seem to deter Dhoni one bit and analysts say that’s been his strength. Not worrying much about the outcome, but playing on.
"You may feel there’s something amateurish about this, but if you think this is just the attitude which can enhance your performance and win matches," says Harsha Bhogle, television cricket commentator and a management consultant.
No baggage, no egos, just plain enthusiasm to prove, is all this young leader and his boys demonstrated in abundance. That’s the best thing about having young leaders, say analysts. Such youngsters don’t think about what reputation they have to save, what endorsements they need to guard, but there’s always something to play for and win.
The young professionals too equal the temperament that make up better leaders and performers. "We shouldn’t be apprehensive about handing over charge to youngsters. At least they play to win, give it what they can, rather than thinking about what they need to protect, their reputation," says Percept D’Mark COO Roland Landers.
According to experts, Team India has exhibited all traits that a bunch of high performers in any successful organisation do. "Dhoni and his team have emerged as a team with stability," says BCCI vice-president Lalit Modi.
"Moreover, Dhoni has come out as a mentor like any other team leader." The team combines a perfect blend of qualities such as leader’s trust and team’s integrity.
Team India’s performance has not only been about technical skills, but team work, holding the nerves, keeping cool and encouraging team members when they are down in spirit. "It just shows what your softer skills can help you achieve," says Godfrey Phillips India HR EVP Arun Kumar.
"People think it’s secondary, but it’s the level of expertise you have in handling people, building the rapport with team members, all soft skills, that most of the time determine the result in the end."
Though the new found aggression demonstrated by the men-in-blue seems to be working, it’s brought brilliant team work to the fore for the first time. “New players are happy to play under him and the camaraderie they have on field will help the team to come out on top,” says Collage Sports Management director Latika Khaneja.
However, given the positives of Team India that are being much talked about may well be someday written as a case study, if the team shows consistency.
