NEW DELHI: The chairman of US technology giant IBM made a short stop in the Indian capital, on Thursday, to promote his company's technology-based solution that helps authorities to manage cities better.

"The information is already out there. You just have to do some predictive modelling and solve problems which face us every day," Palmisano said referring to data analytics and its possible applications in managing cities.

IBM held similar events in other cities across the world including New York City, Shanghai, Rio de Janeiro and Berlin.

The Big Blue's boss also said India should not be wedded to its success in exporting information technology services, but has to use its large pool of talented engineers "to move to the future."

About 400 engineers in IBM's India software labs are developing solutions that it claims can predict and manage problems of traffic, water, crime and power shortage. IBM India employs over 1.5 lakh people and generates revenues of about $2 billion.

In India, the company is running some 30 pilots in states like Gujarat, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh for its technology solutions that are broadly branded as Smarter Cities.
