Hindalco commissions India’s first Superfine PPT ATH plant in Karnataka

Hindalco Industries Ltd has commissioned a greenfield Superfine PPT ATH (Precipitated Aluminium Trihydrate) manufacturing plant at its Belagavi refinery in Karnataka, marking the first domestic production of the specialty alumina product in India.

The facility has an annual production capacity of 30,000 tonnes in its first phase and is designed for phased expansion to 60,000 tonnes, the company said on Thursday.

PPT ATH is a halogen-free flame-retardant material used in halogen-free flame-retardant (HFFR) cables, polymer insulators, thermal insulation, composites and paints. In cable applications, it helps suppress flame propagation and smoke generation without releasing halogen acid gases.


Hindalco said the new facility is designed to meet almost the entire domestic demand for PPT ATH from the wire and cable industry.

The company said demand for the material is growing amid stricter fire-safety standards, increasing adoption of electric vehicles and infrastructure, and a shift towards sustainable, high-performance materials.

The Bureau of Indian Standards has introduced IS 17048:2018 for HFFR cables, aligning Indian standards with global safety benchmarks, Hindalco said.

The facility produces Hindalco’s InnoSafe Superfine PPT ATH and has been developed through an in-house technology and research and development programme. It incorporates automated controls for critical processes and an integrated manufacturing ecosystem aimed at maintaining feedstock quality and product consistency.

Hindalco said the facility is the world's only speciality alumina plant to operate entirely on renewable energy. It is powered by biomass, solar and wind sources.

The PPT ATH is produced at Hindalco’s Belagavi refinery, which recorded a greenhouse gas intensity of 0.44 tCO2e per tonne of alumina on a year-to-date basis in FY26, the company said.
