HFCL marks Rs 300 crore for Telangana optic-fibre plant
Telecom infrastructure developer Himachal Futuristic Communications (HFCL) has proposed to invest nearly ₹300 crore in Telangana to set up its first optical-fibre manufacturing facility with a capacity of 8 million fibre kilometres a year.

The company has plans to manufacture preform — the raw material for optical fibre — optical-fibre cables and defence equipment in subsequent phases . “This will be our first optic-fibre manufacturing plant and will meet more than 50% of our needs, currently which is being met through a combination of imports and local procurement,” chairman Mahendra Nahata said on Monday.

Nahata was speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony of the facility at Telangana’s electronic park, E-city, on the outskirts of Hyderabad. The facility will cater to the requirements of telecommunication and broadband service providers.


The company said over the years, it will increase the manufacturing capacity to more than 12 million fibre km.

As much as 40% of its requirement of optical fibre, a key raw material for optic cable, is met through imports, while the remaining is procured locally.
