Vineet Nayyar, ex-Tech Mahindra Vice Chairman, passes away at 85

Vineet Nayyar, former Executive Vice Chairman of Tech Mahindra, passed away on Thursday at the age of 85. His former colleague and friend CP Gurnani, also a former Tech Mahindra MD and CEO, took to X to share the demise of Nayyar and expressed his grief.

"Heartbreaking news..India has lost one its finest leaders today.. #VineetNayyar.. Personally it's like losing the light that has led me for decades...He was friend, philosopher, brother, guide & statesman par excellence.. My heart and thoughts with Reva and family. #OmShanti," he said.



Nayyar has also served as the Vice-chairman and MD of the Infrastructure Leasing & Financial Services (IL&FS) in 2018 to 2020.

Nasscom, the apex body for the technology industry in India, also expressed their condolences.

"We will always remember the significant contributions of Vineet Nayyar, former Executive Vice Chairman of Tech Mahindra. His visionary leadership and dedication have left an indelible mark on the industry. Our deepest condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues. His impact and achievements have carved a lasting legacy," it said on X.

Anand Mahindra also penned a heartfelt note for Nayyar, calling him "a larger than life figure in the Indian Business landscape".


Nayyar has worked for the Indian government, international multilateral agencies, and the corporate sector (both public and private) over the course of a career spanning more than four decades.

He spent more than ten years as a World Bank employee and founded the state-owned Gas Authority of India, serving as its managing director and chairman.

He was the Vice Chairman of HCL Technologies Ltd. and the Managing Director of HCL Corporation Ltd.

Besides his duties at Tech Mahindra, Nayyar has held directorships on the boards of Tech Mahindra Foundation, Mahindra Logisoft Business Solutions, Mahindra Holidays and Resorts India, The Great Eastern Shipping Company Limited, Greatship (India) Ltd, and Vidya Investments.
