Billionbrains Garage Ventures, which operates online investment platform Groww, said continued selling by Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs), alongside geopolitical tensions in West Asia, has created a mixed operating environment boosting short-term trading activity but weighing on medium-term investor sentiment.

For the quarter ended March, the company reported a 122% year-on-year jump in consolidated net profit to Rs 686 crore, while revenue from operations rose 87% YoY to Rs 1,505 crore, supported by strong user engagement and higher market-linked activity.

Groww noted that sustained FII selling has contributed to heightened market volatility. In the near term, such conditions typically drive higher user activity on the platform, particularly in derivatives and commodities, where trading tends to accelerate during volatile phases.

However, the company cautioned that the same environment also leads to higher associated costs due to increased risk and volatility management requirements.

More importantly, Groww flagged that prolonged periods of FII-driven market underperformance tend to have a lagged impact on the business. Over the medium term, continued outflows from foreign investors can dampen broader investor sentiment, leading to moderation in new user acquisition and weaker inflows of customer assets onto the platform.

The commentary underscores the dual impact of FIIs on retail brokerage platforms: while they can indirectly stimulate trading activity through volatility, sustained selling pressure risks slowing the structural expansion of retail participation in capital markets.
