Cos hire temps from non-graduate pool

For the first time, employers in India are warming up to the idea of hiring school passouts or college dropouts in their bench of organised temporary workforce.

NEW DELHI: For the first time, employers in India are warming up to the idea of hiring school passouts or college dropouts in their bench of organised temporary workforce. Until now, a graduate degree was the basic filter to chaff out candidates in the organised temp workforce.

Human resource consultants say it is a significant development as such candidates tend to be more loyal than those with a graduate certificate. For the undergrads, the option to join the formal workforce is limited and a job still means livelihood.

Says Manish Sabharwal, chairman of Teamlease, the largest player in the domestic temping industry, “Given the boom in the economy, companies have realised the opportunity cost of not hiring is very high. In jobs, where the skill set required is basic, smart college dropouts can do a better job than graduates.”

The 2-lakh strong organised temp workforce first witnessed such a trend in September. According to Teamlease, 15-20% of its monthly net additions of 2,000-3,000 people on its roll of 58,000 temps are non graduates.

Says Sonal Chandole, director (national sales) at Kelly Services India, “Employers are getting more realistic about who they can hire. So educational qualification is not the primary determining factor. However, in our case, we have not started hiring school passouts yet, though we have few undergraduates on our rolls.”

Those in the temping business say the pool of ‘non-graduates’ would be the next big opportunity to tap into, for growth. For now, the demand for college drop-outs comes from telecom and financial service companies. However, there’s a huge demand for sales persons in front-end jobs and companies, who are not hiring college drop-outs run the risk of compromising on their growth trajectory.

The supply of undergrads would be maintained if they are lured to the organised sector by a formal job with structured compensation package, says another HR consultant.
