Corporate India woos employees with designer designations
Giving fancy designations to increase productivity - like calling a sentry a ‘door keeping executive’ - seems to be the mantra of Indian corporate houses.
Cooking up designation to attract the right candidate in the new mantra of corporate houses. The concept is to promote the efficient ones by giving them a fair scope to work without him getting bored, career consultancy whereismyboss.com vice-chairman Aditya Vikram said.
Mr Vikram said the trend of giving fancy designation is increasing by the day to other industries from the it sector. He adds that the concept of fancy designation is not in vogue in family-owned businesses, but is prevalent mostly among private firms.
In the family-owned businesses, the owners are in-play with the management. The employers have mental bond with the employees and the concept of babudom prevails, Mr Vikram said. However, private sector employees target short term satisfaction and to them designation is most important, he added.
The concept of fancy designation changes in a family business. Family business prefers to call it an additional sub-department and the employees are provided with additional responsibility.Business houses feel that nurturing employee flexibility is the latest trend in the Indian corporate scene.

There have been instances when a high-profile employee does not know whom to report to. To avoid problems later, employers can state in the appointment letter the required formalities, Mr Vikram said. Elaborating on the concept, Pankaj Bansal, CEO of human resource services provider Peoplestrong, said: Designation, if equivalent to hierarchy, is bureaucracy. But if it gives an explanation for the job role and does not show power, it is good for an organisation.
