Traditionally, Indian companies have ignored the importance of creating a working environment that enhances productivity. But times are changing, and so are employer mindsets.
More and more organisations today are realising that it is not only important to offer their employees a better work-life balance, but also an office atmosphere that raises the ‘Happiness Quotient’.
Though the ‘ideal office design’ will be different for different companies, depending on the nature of job, staff strength and space availability, we will look at four core aspects of a great office design:
Innovative & Functional
Therefore, offices should be designed with an in-depth understanding of the uniqueness of an organisation and not just to create functional workspaces.
Designers need to work closely with clients and constantly challenge their preconceived notions with innovative design solutions that fit in with the sensibilities of the end-user. Often companies create dedicated ‘Experience Centres’ within the office premises to attract clients and potential visitors. Why not try making the entire office itself an Experience Centre!
Fun & Recreation at Work
Fostering Relationships
Office areas must also offer more social and public interactive spaces that employees can use to include friends and family in their work life. These areas can, of course, lie outside the secured zones of a corporate office.
We have recently created a lounge and café bar in the reception area of a BPO company that provides a hospitable and relaxed environment for its associate and their visitors, without subjecting them to unnecessary security checks.
The Perfect Balance
On the flip side, as Nick Bilton — technology writer and reporter for The New York Times’ Bits Blog — points out, too many design disruptions by creating new comforts for employees have been perceived to promote a growing sense of complacency.
Fully-stocked pantries placed just 150 feet away from one’s work desk, and an excess of services from massages and drycleaning to car rentals could very well substantiate Bilton’s theory that “Complacency is the demise of Creativity!”Therefore, a good balance by creating the ‘hunger’ of a start-up company with a reasonably ‘satiable’ design environment is the key to ensuring employee bliss!
