PUNE: An overseas company, looking to partner with an Indian company owned by two brothers, suggested the Indian entrepreneurs undertake a psychometric test before inking the deal. The aim was to see the strengths and weaknesses through an analytical, objective test. Welcome to the world of psychometric opportunities.

According to SHL (India) managing director YVL Pandit the demand is growing sharply. We help BPOs in their recruitment processes. Companies call us in as third party objective assessors to identify or assess the potential of the existing staff, said Mr Pandit. Then there are customers who want the company to identify high potential managers from a list that they provide.

While Mr Pandit declined to comment on the market opportunity, he pointed at the opportunities. In Europe and the UK, 65%-70% companies use psychometric instruments. In India, this figure is 18% and we expect Indian companies to reach the European levels in another five-six years. The market in India for such a product is fragmented and dominated mainly by individuals who have set up consulting practices.

SHL is a UK-based, $150 million designer, developer and assessor for companies people performance management. According to Mr Pandit, the situation in India has changed drastically since Indian companies globalise and accept best practices from overseas. SHL India, which started operations in Mumbai in 1999, now has offices and clients in Delhi and Bangalore. The company soon plans to open offices in Chennai and Kolkata.

In India, SHL has worked with banking, insurance, pharma, IT and manufacturing companies, although the systems can be used by any sector. The subjectivity of the employers processes in selection and internal development of its employees is supplemented by the third party, objective assessment of SHLs tools.
