CII training initiative gets momentum

The joint skill-building initiative of Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and Tamil Nadu Government seems to be gaining momentum with seven companies extending their initial support.

CHENNAI: The joint skill-building initiative of Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and Tamil Nadu Government seems to be gaining momentum with seven companies extending their initial support.

CCCL, LMW, Saint-Gobain, TV Sundram Iyengar & Sons, Loyal Textile and Cavin Kare will use their corporate training centres to impart skills in construction, engineering, automotive and logistics, textiles besides beauty and retail.

The CII has set a target to train 15,000 workers across different disciplines. The average cost of a three-month certificate course works out to Rs 5,900 per worker, CII TN chairman Manikam Ramaswami told reporters here on Thursday.

As part of training programme, he said on February 2, CII would sensitise 100-odd principals of colleges affiliated to the Madurai Kamaraj university on various aspects of building the skill base of the state.

So far, 290 faculty had been trained in about three batches. Though this year target of training 10,000 faculty may not be achieved, CII has a series of training sessions lined up. Each three-day programme works out to Rs 2000 per faculty, he added.

Welcoming the health insurance scheme announced by the state government, he said existing health workers could be trained to ensure a better healthcare delivery. One health worker can do the initial screening of 4,000 people in a year.

CII has given a proposal to the state government suggesting that a 70% reduction in hospitalisation expenses on life style diseases is possible. The industry body has taken up a study in Kanchipuram tracking the 14 year data for the purpose, Mr Ramaswami said.
