China to break-up with the dragon
Keeping in mind its rising global stature, China plans to junk its most famous image symbol, the dragon.
Shanghai, China's most cosmopolitan city, has started a new research aiming to rebuild China's national image brand and display it to the world. The project is headed by the Communist Party secretary of Shanghai International Studies University and vice-chairman of Shanghai Public Relations Association, Professor Wu Youfu.
Since time immemorial, the dragon has been representing China. While the Chinese feel proud for being the "dragon's offspring", the western world has considered it as a tyrannous and aggressive buster. Therefore it is easy to create an untrue image of China in the minds of those knowing little about the history and culture of the nation, Wu said.
As the localisation of the views of the "dragon" tends to result in misunderstanding or intentional distortion, Wu suggests that China's national images can vary depending on space and time.
Along with Chinese historical factors and modern features, different cultural traits and religious backgrounds of various ethnic groups and regions, should be taken into consideration while deciding upon a new image symbol. When the research project is completed, the new image symbol of China may be adopted by concerned departments, the report further added.
