To honour the efforts of companies who have adopted best practices and have shown remarkable results, VMware in collaboration with the Economic Times, process advisors EY organised the 10th edition of the VMware Business Impact Awards 2022.

The main objective of the awards is to honour the achievements of the organizations that have undertaken innovative digital solutions delivering significant business impact and exceptional experiences for end-users.

Pandemic accelerated digital adoption
The first segment began with Pradeep Nair, Vice President and Managing Director, VMware India and Raghu Raghuram, Chief Executive Officer, VMware sharing insights on how digital transformation has played a vital role since the start of the pandemic.

Raghuram explained that though digital transformation has been around even before the pandemic, the process of digital adoption has been accelerated by two decades. “CIO’s, CEO’s and IT organization have undertaken digital efforts which they would have never done at the speed that they have done now,” he said.

According to Raghuram, these companies have benefitted immensely from it which has prompted them to go even faster. “Look at segments like the telemedicine, though the technology has always been around, it was hardly used earlier. Now it is a de-facto way of consulting in several countries,” he informed.

Raghuram also explained that customers for most companies have changed the way they have been transacting, thus affecting every aspect of business today. “Overnight most of our customers went from one or two percent working from home to 98 or 99 percent working from home thus impacting everyone,” he said.

The rapid adoption of digital technology has transformed business processes. “In retail, it is just not about eCommerce, but omnichannel which is able to deliver, or order online. A local retail showroom has become your logistics warehouse for people to pick things up,” Raghuram informed.

Companies are rethinking their manufacturing operations and have become more efficient due to digital adoption. All this is a part of the digital transformation.

Speaking on his observation on digital acceleration, Raghuram informed that there is tremendous emphasis on modernizing application portfolios that customers have. “Whether it is rewriting certain applications, moving certain applications to the cloud, adopting SaaS or fundamentally rethinking the customer experience in writing applications,” he informed.

According to IDC estimates, there will be a million new applications written over the next five years, which is more than the ones written in the last 20-30 years which is a big trend that is been seen.

Focus on sustainability

Raghuram explained that sustainability has been vital to the company’s vision and future success. He added that the company has avoided 1.2 billion metric tons of carbon emissions. Replying to Pradeep Nair, he said that the company has a legacy of enabling positive environmental impact through their technology solutions. “We will continue to enable decarbonization of digital infrastructure across our customer ecosystem, value chain and our own operations,” he explained. VMware has been a certified Carbon Neutral Company since 2018. The operations have been powered 100% by renewable energy since 2019.
