Banga's parting advice to HUL: Be aggressive on every front

Vindi Banga advised Hindustan Unilever to be aggressive to ward off competition. After 33 years, Banga to leave Unilever | Exclusive: Banga speaks to ET Now

LONDON: Deciding to hang up his boots on Unilever after 33 years of service, Vindi Banga today advised the Indian arm of the global FMCG giant, Hindustan Unilever, to be aggressive to ward off competition.

"Be aggressive on every front," Manvinder Singh Banga, better known as Vindi Banga, told PTI when asked for his advice to Hindustan Unilever, the company that helped him catapult to become one of the top international corporate honchos.

He will be leaving Unilever in May after being with the company for 33 years. He is, at present, a member of the executive board, besides being the Global President for Food, Home and Personal care.

Of late, HUL has been losing market share to rivals like ITC, P&G, and even Dabur in various segments. Banga, however, believes that HUL will bounce back.

"Whatever may be the competition issues, the company(HUL) should fight back. The pressure could be temporary," he said.

When reminded of the recent legal tangle that HUL got itself into with rival Procter & Gamble, perhaps in a bid to be more aggressive, he said: "This happens (from) time to time but HUL has weathered every storm."

With a long history behind it, Banga said HUL will continue to do well in the Indian market as before.

"HUL is a strong brand and a great company and has been performing well. It has been there for 75 years and will be there for another 75 years and so will be Unilever," Banga said.
