Australia eyes talented Indian IT pros
Australian companies, reeling under severe skill shortages, are increasingly eyeing India for commercial synergies in the IT and ITeS segments.
With over 4,000 call centres and 2 lakh employees, Australia perhaps has the largest call centre concentration globally. But, of late, it has been facing staff shortage and sharp cost escalation . “This is acutally a great opportunity for India,” Mr C Sarat Chandran , Director, Indo-Australian Chamber of Commerce, said.
Indo-Australian Chamber of Commerce, the apex body of Indo-Australian business, in association with the Victorian Employer’s Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Employer’s Federation in Melbourne are working to create awareness on the opportunities present.
“Our objective is to bring in 1% of Australia’s call centres, or 40 of them, to India this year. That is an achievable goal,” he said.
In the past years, over 12 Australian companies have set up outsourcing operations in India. Optus has moved 150 jobs to Bangalore, Sales Force has tied up with Hero group and IPP technologies , has a contract with Logica CMG for processing electoral data.
A number of SMEs in Australia are also in the fray. Robertson & Marks, a New South Wales-based company is in the process of setting up a facility for CAD-related work in Chennai. The chamber has organised a seminar in Chennai on June 23 to highlight the opportunites for Australian companies in the ITES space. There will be presentations by several Australian and Indian companies.
