At Rs 14.5 cr, Kapil still swings it best
Did you know? Kapil’s earnings in the last one year outperform most current cricketers.
In 2003, sports management company Percept D’Mark signed on former cricketers Kapil Dev and Sunil Gavaskar to work with it on events and assignments. Today, Kapil, with Rs 14.5 crore in his bag under a year, has raced past formidable names in the game. Sample Ganguly’s Rs 10-crore kitty, Dravid’s Rs 12-14 crore or Tendulkar’s Rs 15-20 crore.
At Rs 14.5 crore, Kapil is proving to be quite a match-winner off the field after having retired from the game in 1994. The boost in Kapil’s earnings this year is largely due to the World Cup. Last year, his earnings were only Rs 8-9 crore. “For brands, it makes both topical and tactical sense to rope in Kapil during the World Cup,” says Percept Talent Management COO Vinita Bangard.
However, sceptics like 21st Century Management chief Lokesh Sharma say Kapil Dev’s pay is highly exaggerated. “Kapil doesn’t make more than Rs 30 lakh per endorsement, and should not be making over Rs 3-4 crore,” Mr Sharma said.
