ADAG belts out chartbuster for Gujarat

Metro rail Project, 1,500 mw power plant & desalination unit are on R-ADAG radar.

AHMEDABAD: Anil Ambani-controlled Reliance-Anil Dhirubhai Ambani Group (RADAG ) has written to the Gujarat government that it was exploring opportunities to invest in several projects in the state. R-ADAG has specified around half-a-dozen projects the group is eyeing. These include the Ahmedabad-Gandhinagar metro rail project, a 1,500-mw power plant in Pipavav, a desalination plant in Kutch, IT parks and healthcare business across the state.

The government is mulling desalination projects in the parched Kutch and Saurastra regions. Kutch has been witnessing a lot of industrial activity due to the tax benefits offered by the government. The water crisis threatens to affect the industry.

The proposed capacity for the desalination plants are 120 MLD each. The investment for the project has been estimated at Rs 3,780 million ($84 million) for a plant based on RO process and Rs 5,940 million ($132 million) for the one based on MSF process, said government sources.

R-ADAG in the letter has said it is keen to be a part of the project, said a government official. The group has also set its eyes on IT parks and healthcare business, which includes managing hospitals across Gujarat.

“We have received a letter from RADAG , where they have mentioned the areas the group is interested in, which include IT and healthcare business amongst others,” said a government official. Apart from desalination plant, IT parks and healthcare, RADAG is also keen on the Rs 4,600-crore metro rail project between Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar.

The Gujarat government has already appointed the Infrastructure Leasing & Financial Service (IL&FS ) as the second consultant for due diligence on metro rail project. R-ADAG and the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority are jointly working on phase 1 of the Rs 2,356-crore Mumbai metro project.

Ambani junior has also proposed to set up a 1,500 mw power plant in Pipavav. The group intends to set up the imported coal-based plant with an investment of over Rs 6,000 crore. “R-ADAG also plans to set up a jetty and port near the power plant,” said the official.
