NEW DELHI: Indian blue chip PSUs from various sectors have made it to the top 20 companies for the year 2006 grabbing seven positions out of total 20.
Most of these seven are navratna that enjoy leadership positions among the top com-panies from 20 identified sectors, according to 'India's Top 500 Companies 2006' released by Dun & Bradstreet last week in Mumbai.
The seven companies chosen by Dun & Bradstreet (D&B) sector wise are NTPC Ltd in Power - generation, transmission, distribution, ONGC Ltd in Oil and Gas - Exploration, Steel Authority of India in Iron and Steel, NALCO in Non-Ferrous Metals, GAIL (India) Ltd in Gas-Processing, Transmission, & Marketing, MMTC Ltd in Trading and Shipping Corporation of India in Shipping and Logistics.
They have been awarded the Dun & Bradstreet-American Express Corporate Awards for 2006.
PSUs account for 56% of the total revenue of the top 500 Indian companies even though the number of PSUs in top 500 is much less than private comap-nies at 76. In 1997 when Dun & Bradstreet survey was first published, 63 PSUs featured in the top 500 companies and contributed 47% of the total revenues.
Much more remarkable was the fact that younger and agile companies were ready to unseat those that made it to the top 500 list and thus only 260 out of 941 companies featured in all the editions published so far.
The number of companies featuring for the first time in top 500 companies stood at 110.
