Preparations are on in full swing to turn New Delhi into a grand stage for a summit that reflects the changing balance of the global economy and geopolitics, with leaders of the expanded BRICS grouping set to gather in the capital city in the backdrop of rising interest in trade, finance and strategic cooperation.

The 18th BRICS Leaders’ Summit will be held at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi over this weekend. The meeting comes at a key juncture for BRICS which has grown from its original Brazil-Russia-India-China grouping into a wider platform with greater economic and geopolitical weight, with the grouping increasingly addressing trade, finance, development, technology, supply chains and global governance.

The BRICS meeting comes to India not merely as a diplomatic event, but as a test of the country's ability to convene a major emerging-market coalition's showpiece summit while showcasing the capital as a global economic and political hub.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin ahead of the summit. Their discussions are expected to cover defence cooperation, nuclear energy, trade and broader economic ties, while also touching on regional and global developments.

Chinese President Xi Jinping is among the leaders expected to attend the New Delhi summit. His participation could add major significance to India-China engagement, with a meeting between Modi and Xi expected on the sidelines of the gathering.

The summit is expected to bring together leaders from several BRICS members and partner countries, along with representatives of international organisations.

The event is being preceded by an extensive logistical and civic exercise across Delhi. Delhi International Airport Limited has begun operationalising Pier C at Terminal 3 for international flights, with arrivals and departures planned starting September 10. This is expected to raise annual the international passenger-handling capacity of the airport to 31 million.

The New Delhi Municipal Council activated a round-the-clock command centre and deployed additional sanitation workers and equipment along key routes. It also intensified inspections, road repairs, drainage work and enforcement measures ahead of the summit.
