Your health is in your hands! Bengaluru police commissioner issues advisory amid rising cases of viral GBS disease

Amid rising cases of Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) cases in Mumbai and Pune, Bengaluru Police have issued a public alert about the rare autoimmune disorder. Bengaluru Police Commissioner, in a recent Instagram video, emphasized the importance of early detection for effective treatment. He urged the public to stay informed, stating, “Your health is in your hands! GBS disease is on the rise—early detection is key.” He further added, “Awareness today can prevent a crisis tomorrow!”

GBS Deaths in Mumbai and Pune

A 53-year-old man from Mumbai recently became the first fatality in the city linked to GBS, following the rise of the condition in neighboring Pune. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is investigating whether this death is related to the outbreak in Pune, as the man had traveled there a month prior. In addition to the fatality, a 16-year-old girl from Palghar district and a 64-year-old woman from Andheri (West) have been diagnosed with GBS and are receiving treatment at hospitals in Mumbai.

Pune Most Affected by GBS Outbreak

Pune remains the hardest-hit district in Maharashtra, with the number of suspected and confirmed GBS cases reaching 2,037 as of February 12. Out of these, 176 have been diagnosed with GBS. The death toll in Maharashtra now stands at nine, with one death in Mumbai and eight in Pune. A 59-year-old man from Khadakwasla, Pune, died at Navale Hospital after being diagnosed with GBS.

Geographical Spread in Pune

The cases in Pune are spread across several areas. Of the 2,037 suspected cases, 40 are from Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) areas, 92 from newly incorporated villages in the PMC, 29 from Pimpri Chinchwad, 28 from Pune Rural, and eight from other districts. Among the 176 diagnosed cases, 41 are from PMC, 94 from newly added villages, 29 from Pimpri Chinchwad, and 31 from Pune Rural.

Over 100 cases of GBS in Pune

In Pune, 109 patients have been discharged, while 52 are in the ICU and 20 are on ventilator support. The outbreak is suspected to be linked to the campylobacter jejuni pathogen, commonly associated with foodborne infections.

GBS Symptoms

Guillain-Barré Syndrome is a rare condition where the immune system attacks the peripheral nerves, causing muscle weakness, loss of sensation in the limbs, and difficulties in swallowing or breathing. Public awareness about early detection is crucial in managing the disease effectively.
