Bengaluru Waste Collection Fee Structure
The Karnataka government approved the new fee, which was proposed last November by Bengaluru Solid Waste Management Ltd (BSWML) and sanctioned by the Urban Development Department. It is expected to generate around Rs 600 crore annually, with the potential for higher revenues. The fee will be incorporated into property tax and will vary based on the built-up area, with rates ranging from Rs 10 per month for properties under 600 sq ft to Rs 400 per month for properties over 4,000 sq ft.Impact on Bulk Waste Generators
For large waste generators like apartment complexes and office buildings, the government will charge Rs 12 per kg of unprocessed waste, unless they use approved agencies. This could increase operational costs for housing societies and commercial units.Residents Demand Transparency
“I’m willing to pay the garbage tax, but I expect a clean Bengaluru in return. Ministers and bureaucrats must ensure that funds are spent transparently and not misused. If they misspend money, the Garuda Purana has a special place for them,” said one resident, reflecting the concerns of many.Skepticism About Accountability
While the existing Solid Waste Management (SWM) Cess remains unchanged, the new fee is designed to address gaps in service levels. Despite this, many citizens remain skeptical about the system's implementation and accountability.Citizens Want Results, Not More Receipts
