The incident, captured on video, shows the elderly man and his son pleading with mall security at the entrance. Despite explaining their situation and having pre-booked tickets, they were barred from entering. The video quickly went viral, triggering widespread criticism of the mall's management.
According to reports, the supervisor on duty upheld the policy, insisting it was a strict directive from higher management. The man was allegedly asked to change into pants before being allowed inside.
The incident has sparked a wave of condemnation on social media, with many expressing outrage over what they perceive as disrespect towards traditional attire. BJP national spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla criticized the Karnataka government, drawing attention to the incident as a symbol of discrimination against farmers, who commonly wear dhotis.
"The Karnataka CM wears a dhoti! Dhoti is our pride... Should farmers wear a tuxedo in a mall?" Poonawalla questioned on X.
Users on social media platforms have echoed similar sentiments, calling for corrective action by the mall management. "The mall should correct this mistake and provide one year free movie pass to the old person as compensation," suggested one user.
As of now, GT Mall management has not issued a statement regarding the incident, leaving the matter open to ongoing scrutiny and public debate.
