With flood water now receding in Bengaluru, many residents are making way back to home to find out that their dream homes have suffered massive damages. The returning rain-battered residents are slowly coming to terms with the financial consequences of the havoc.

The inundated homes in Bengaluru have suffered heavy damages in the form of damaged furniture and other household items, however, the electricity items and electric infrastructure have been impacted the most. The flood waters contain elements like sewage and salts such as calcium, magnesium and sodium, that make the entire electrical infrastructure and appliances useless.

In order to ensure safety from electrocution in future, residents may have to take the costly route of replacing the entire electric infrastructure. Further, if electrical appliances like refrigerators, washing machines, or grinders were submerged in water, it might have to be replaced as well.

As per the rough estimates residents may have to shell out as much as Rs 10-15 lakh to replace the electrical infrastructure like digital meters, lift cables, electrical panels, circuits, lighting, cables and switch boards. The estimates don't include the external systems like diesel gen-sets and solar or UPS inverters. If replacement cost of inverters, diesel gen-sets or batteries are to be considered, then each owner might have to spend over Rs 40 to 50 lakh to replace all of them.

Residents may have to also ensure that all water is drained out before taking up electrical repair work. Otherwise it will lead to electrocution or fire mishaps. Meanwhile, if you continue to use the same infrastructure, they may keep triggering a spark or cause mild shocks due to presence of moisture within.
