Ban on cars, cable car, light show: How Karnataka plans to develop Nandi Hills as a big tourist hotspot

In a bid to transform Nandi Hills into a more accessible and enjoyable tourism destination, the Karnataka government has decided to prohibit private and personal vehicles from entering the area, known for its scenic beauty and historical significance. Nandi Hills, located just 60 kilometers from Bengaluru, often witnesses traffic congestion on weekends, prompting this move to declutter the vicinity and ensure a safe environment for tourists.

The state's tourism department is keen on developing Nandi Hills as a one-day tourism hotspot within the next 6-8 months. As part of this endeavor, vehicular traffic will be restricted, allowing travelers to relish the picturesque surroundings and explore the historically important locations in peace. Additionally, an exciting option of a cable car ride to Nandi Hills will be available for the adventurous souls.

The estimated cost for a ride on the cable car is expected to be approximately Rs 250-300 per person, as per initial assessments. Kapil Mohan, the additional chief secretary, told TOI, "We're developing Nandi Hills as a tourism destination for Bengalureans along with the 9th-century Bhoga Nandishwara temple, featuring night lighting and a sound-and-light show. The spot is being developed in an ecologically sensitive way, with a focus on preserving heritage, archaeology, and catering to the adventurous aspects of tourism."


Given the reputation of Nandi Hills as an accident-prone area, the police had already imposed restrictions, banning bikers and four-wheelers from entering the 2km stretch connecting the hills to the plains during New Year and other prominent holidays. To further ensure the safety of tourists, the government intends to implement a ban on private vehicles entering the hills altogether. Instead, a small fleet of electric buses will be introduced to transport visitors from the foothills to the hilltop, facilitating a seamless and secure tourism experience.
