Ahead of GST Council meet, why is 35% GST trending today?

The figure 35% trended in India today, and the number has a decision behind it. Tax on aerated drinks, cigarettes and demerit goods is likely to go upto 35%. Group of Ministers (GoM) on rationalising GST rates has proposed upping the tax from present 28%. GST has four slabs at 5, 12, 18, and 28 per cent currently. ‘Sin’ products are taxed higher for the government to enhance revenue collection.
