Kotak Mutual Fund's Nilesh Shah shares a Diwali investment mantra: Stay invested through market corrections to participate in future market gains.
As Indian investors enter Samvat 2083, Nilesh Shah, MD of Kotak Mutual Fund, has a message on the importance of staying disciplined through market volatility. Shah said investors can enjoy the gains of a rising market only if they are willing to stay invested through market falls as well.

Drawing on the words of poet Ramdhari Singh Dinkar, Shah highlighted that those who have never experienced a battle are equally unfortunate, either because they broke their vow or fled the battlefield.

“Those who have never known a battle in their lives are equally unfortunate. Either they broke their vow, or they fled the battlefield.” — Ramdhari Singh Dinkar.

Applying the same thought to financial markets, Shah said investors cannot claim the Teji (bull run) unless they have stood through the Mandi (bear market).

The disciplined investor is the one who does not abandon the investment plan when fear grips the market, does not run away from the battlefield of volatility and one who continues to follow the principles of asset allocation.

According to Shah, investors who remain committed to their investment strategy through difficult market phases earn the right to celebrate the gains when markets turn favourable.

Shah said that, “The same holds true to the markets. You cannot truly claim the Teji unless you have stood through the Mandi. The disciplined investor —who does not abandon the plan when fear is high, who does not run from the battlefield of volatility, and who keeps faith in the dharma of asset allocation is the one who earns the right to celebrate the bull run.”
