I am 30 years old and new to mutual funds. I work as a clerk in a bank. I have invested Rs 2,000 and Rs 1,000 through SIPs in SBI Bluechip Fund - direct (growth). I want to invest in SBI Small Cap Fund. Will it be beneficial? Can I invest Rs 3,000 more and which fund should I choose?

Chokkalingam Palaniappan, Director, Prakala Wealth Management, responds:

Smallcap funds may offer you higher returns over a longer period. If you do not need money for a long term (greater than seven years), you may invest Rs 3,000 in SBI Small Cap Fund. The scheme has given good returns in the past and it may give decent returns over the long period.
