I am a 45-years-old NRI living in Dubai. I am investing Rs 5,000 in each of the following mutual funds via SIPs.

Aditya Birla Sun Life Equity Fund
DSP BlackRock Equity Opportunites Fund
Mirae Asset Emerging Bluechip Fund
Reliance Small Cap Fund
HDFC Balanced Fund

My investment horizon is around 10-15 years and I am investing for my daughter’s marriage (aged 14 years) and my retirement.
Until now, the total value of my mutual fund investment is Rs 8 lakh, which includes the above mentioned SIPs and some other mutual funds, where I have already stopped my SIPs. Does my portfolio need any changes? Shall I shift the amount in other mutual funds to these five funds? Also, is it okay to replace Mirae Asset Emerging Bluechip Fund with L&T Midcap Fund?

Vishal Ramaswamy, a mutual fund advisor, reponds:

I don’t believe that you need to make any changes in your portfolio. Not all these schemes are the best. However, since you have a long-term investment horizon, the annualised returns of these schemes would catch up to match or even beat the market over the next 10-15 years.

You can shift the money from other mutual fund schemes (provided you are gaining in them) first to a liquid fund and then set up an STP into these five schemes. This would be the best strategy for you.

Mirae Asset Emerging Bluechip is a good scheme. It had given excellent returns before the recent corrections in the market. It was the first fund to identify some of the most out-performing stocks. Though L&T Midcap Fund is equally good, there is no need to make a switch now.
