I am a 36-year-old businessman. I am investing around Rs 10,000 per month via SIP. I also have investments in ELSS. I am confused about retirement planning. Please advise.

Veena Malgonkar, certified financial planner, KM Wealth Solutions, responds:

First, you need to calculate your retirement corpus. Further, you need to know how many years you have left for retirement. If you find this task tough, seek the help of a financial planner. Next, you should find out whether your SIPs would help you to create your target corpus. For example, assuming an annual return of 14 per cent, a monthly SIP of Rs 10,000 should help you to create a corpus of Rs 52 lakh when you are 60 years.

Finally, during your retired life you should invest in a conservative portfolio with a larger portion in debt mutual funds. You can start a Systematic Withdrawal Plan (SWP) to meet your needs and this would be tax efficient (not tax free). Also, if structured well, it will help you to take care of inflation over the years. A portfolio of mutual funds would offer liquidity, and also give tax-efficient income and a growing corpus in your retired life.
