I have invested in SBI Small Cap Fund through SIP. I have also made one-time investment in Aditya Birla Sun Life Tax Relief 96 and IDFC Tax Advantage (ELSS) Fund. How much returns will I get after two years?

MS Shabbir, founder and managing director of SenSage Financial Services, responds:

You have invested a lumpsum in two Equity Linked Savings Schemes which has a lock-in period of three years. Therefore, their performance in two years is irrelevant. Both the schemes are not the top performers in the ELSS category in one-, three-, and five-year periods. However, the schemes are performing better than the category average.

You have also invested in a small cap mutual fund which is usually recommended to investors in the risk category. Your decision to invest in direct plan shows that you have selected the category without an advisor’s help. SBI Small Cap Fund has underperformed the category average during the last 12 months.

We suggest you to move to a large cap or a balanced fund if you have completed the one-year period to curtail the losses. You may consider investing in HDFC Top 100 Fund or Mirae Asset Large Cap Fund.
