I have invested Rs 1,000 in two mutual fund schemes: DSP BlackRock Opportunities Fund (G) and Sundaram Rural India Fund (G). Both are lumpsum investments. How much can I expect after one year? Actually, I am new to investing and I found these two funds suitable than bank deposits. Please suggest. I am 24 years old.

Deepesh Mehta, Certified Financial Planner, Grow Wealth, responds:

I hope you are investing Rs 1,000 every month, not a lumpsum investment as you mentioned in your message.

Both these funds are equity-oriented funds and one shouldn’t invest in them with a one-year horizon. If you are looking at them as an alternative to bank deposits, it could be a mistake. Bank deposits and equity mutual fund schemes belong to different asset classes. Bank deposits offer assured returns, whereas equity mutual funds do not offer any guaranteed returns. Their performance would depend on the performance of their portfolio of stocks. If you wish to continue with these funds, invest for a minimum horizon of ten years. These funds are not suitable for investment horizon of less than ten years.
