I want to invest in mutual funds and do not have any idea about investments and mutual funds. I want to invest Rs 3 lakh for five years. Please advise. -- Shivani Dewan

Dilshad Billimoria, Chief Financial Planner, Dilzer Consultants, responds:

Good to know you would like to start!

You have not mentioned your age and also your risk analysis. Also, you haven’t mentioned your goals. I assume you should start with an equity debt mix of 25:75 (75 per cent in debt). Since, this is your first hand at investing in mutual funds.

You can gradually increase the allocation to equity as you build a good base in mutual funds.

Ensure that you contact a financial advisor who will monitor the investments for you.
