US Stock Market: Fed uncertainty, oil prices in focus as earnings sustain market optimism

Investors are looking less for a specific rate signal and more for a clearer framework from policymakers on how they intend to balance inflation risks with economic growth.
With limited fresh guidance from policymakers and uncertainty over the US Federal Reserve’s next policy move, investors are increasingly turning to corporate earnings, particularly those linked to artificial intelligence infrastructure spending, to assess whether current bullish expectations can withstand macroeconomic risks.
According to Reuters, the Federal Reserve is likely to remain the key focus for markets, with the Jackson Hole economic symposium from August 27 to 29 seen as the next major opportunity for policymakers to provide greater clarity on the outlook for inflation, economic growth and interest rates.
Markets seek reassurance
Investors are looking less for a specific rate signal and more for a clearer framework from policymakers on how they intend to balance inflation risks with economic growth. The uncertainty has kept markets focused on real Treasury yields, which reflect bond returns after adjusting for inflation and are an important driver of asset valuations.
Higher real yields can put pressure on technology stocks and other long-duration assets by raising financing costs and reducing the relative appeal of future earnings.
Treasury yields also declined as investors reduced expectations for a rate hike at the next Federal Reserve meeting.
Stocks and the S&P 500 technology index have posted modest gains last week, although investors remain alert to the possibility of renewed inflation. Higher energy prices and stalled US-Iran talks have raised concerns that a renewed surge in oil prices could push consumer inflation and bond yields higher, the report stated.
Earnings provide support
For now, strong corporate results have helped limit market volatility. Around 85% of S&P 500 companies that have reported results have exceeded earnings expectations, while profits have risen 32.7%, excluding mark-to-market gains at Alphabet and Amazon, according to LSEG data cited by Reuters.
Upcoming results from Walmart and chipmaker Analog Devices are expected to provide further insight into consumer demand and the broader health of the US economy.
According to the report, investors have been encouraged not only by earnings and revenue beats but also by upbeat corporate guidance, with relatively few companies issuing negative outlooks. The resilience of corporate profits has helped offset concerns about inflation, particularly as some of the recent price pressures are viewed as temporary rather than persistent.
AI-related infrastructure spending has been a particularly strong theme during the current earnings season and is expected to remain a major focus for investors in the weeks ahead.
AI spending remains in focus
Hyperscaler capital spending plans are among the most closely watched developments as investors assess which companies are likely to benefit most from the artificial intelligence boom.
Spending by Big Tech companies on AI is expected to exceed $700 billion this year, up from around $400 billion in 2025. The scale of the investment has raised questions about whether cloud and technology companies will generate sufficient returns to justify such large capital commitments.
However, concerns over excessive spending have so far been tempered by the financial strength of major technology companies and continued demand for cloud and AI services. Investors increasingly view aggressive capital expenditure as a response to strong growth opportunities rather than simply a sign of excessive optimism.
Oil prices and geopolitical developments remain potential threats to the market outlook, particularly if they lead to renewed inflationary pressure and higher bond yields.
Still, after another earnings season characterised by strong results, upbeat guidance and heavy investment in AI infrastructure, corporate America remains an important support for equities. According to Reuters, many investors believe earnings strength could continue to outweigh concerns surrounding rates, inflation and geopolitical risks as the second half of the year progresses.
