Texas steps up challenge to New York’s financial dominance

The New York Stock Exchange has opened a new regional headquarters in Dallas as Texas strengthens its position as an emerging financial hub and attracts businesses from traditional centres such as New York.

According to Reuters, the NYSE’s expansion comes amid a broader shift of financial and corporate activity toward Texas, where companies are drawn by lower taxes, business-friendly regulations and a growing pool of skilled workers.

The NYSE said on Thursday that Texas Governor Greg Abbott was scheduled to ring the NYSE Texas closing bell at the Dallas office during a live broadcast.

NYSE Texas currently has 120 listed securities issuers, while the exchange describes itself as the first securities exchange to be incorporated in Texas.

The move adds to growing competition among exchanges seeking to establish a stronger presence in the state. Nasdaq, the NYSE’s long-standing rival, also operates an exchange in Texas. Earlier this summer, Nasdaq secured a high-profile dual listing after Elon Musk’s SpaceX chose to trade on both exchanges following its initial public offering.

Dallas’ emergence as a financial centre gained further momentum with the launch of the Texas Stock Exchange, another challenger to the NYSE, last month.

The success of Texas’ growing exchange ecosystem will depend on its ability to attract new IPOs and persuade companies already listed elsewhere to establish or shift their primary listings to the state, Reuters said.

Texas Capital Bank, a unit of Texas Capital Bancshares, announced this month that it would move two exchange-traded funds currently listed on NYSE Arca to the Texas Stock Exchange. The move will make the ETFs the startup exchange’s first two listings.

Dallas has increasingly promoted itself as a major financial centre, with Texas Capital Bank highlighting the city’s concentration of financial services workers and the growing presence of financial firms.

The expansion of NYSE Texas, alongside Nasdaq’s Texas operations and the launch of the Texas Stock Exchange, underscores the state’s ambitions to build a financial ecosystem capable of challenging the dominance of New York.
