Japanese government bond (JGB) yields were mixed on Monday, with longer-dated yields rising as investors assessed the outlook for global interest rates and prepared for a series of government bond auctions scheduled over the coming weeks, Reuters reported.

The benchmark 10-year JGB yield was unchanged at 2.77%, after touching 2.785% earlier in the session. Bond yields move inversely to prices. Meanwhile, the 20-year yield rose 2 basis points to 3.63%, while the 30-year yield climbed 4 basis points to 3.875%.

Among shorter maturities, the two-year JGB yield edged up 0.5 basis point to 1.88%, while the five-year yield increased 1 basis point to 2.23%.

Investors are closely monitoring upcoming debt sales by Japan's Ministry of Finance, with a 10-year bond auction scheduled for Thursday. This will be followed by a 30-year bond auction on November 10 and a five-year bond sale on November 12.

The upcoming auctions come amid uncertainty over whether the recent decline in global bond yields can be sustained, particularly as concerns over heavy artificial intelligence-related spending remain elevated.

According to Reuters, Eiichiro Miura, senior general manager of investments at Nissay Asset Management, said global yields could pause their recent downward trend as major technology companies continue to maintain substantial investment plans.

Meanwhile, debt financing by artificial intelligence companies has widened corporate bond spreads, adding pressure to sovereign bond yields, Reuters reported.

Global bond yields have declined in recent sessions as a sell-off in AI-related shares prompted investors to seek the relative safety of government bonds. However, some investors have recently reversed their positions, unwinding bets against bonds while reducing their exposure to AI stocks.

Miura said investors had been unwinding short positions in bonds and long positions in AI-related shares, highlighting a shift in market positioning amid changing risk sentiment, Reuters reported.

The direction of global yields and investor demand at the upcoming Japanese government bond auctions are likely to remain key factors influencing the domestic debt market in the near term.
