Japan’s bond market sends mixed signals as investors weigh inflation and the outlook for interest rates.

Japanese government bond (JGB) yields moved in opposite directions on Tuesday. Shorter-dated yields edged higher while longer-term yields declined as investors assessed persistent inflation pressures and the Bank of Japan’s policy outlook.

The two-year JGB yield, which is particularly sensitive to expectations for BOJ interest rates, rose 1 basis point to 1.915%, while the five-year yield climbed 1.5 basis points to 2.350%, Reuters reported.

At the longer end of the curve, the 30-year JGB yield fell 1 basis point to 4.045%, extending its decline for a fourth consecutive session. The 20-year and 40-year yields were unchanged. The benchmark 10-year yield held steady at 3.01%.

Global bond markets offered limited direction, with US Treasury markets closed on Monday for the Columbus Day holiday. Eurozone bond yields edged lower amid mixed energy prices and contained geopolitical risks.

Investors continued to assess the BOJ’s policy outlook following its September rate hike and signals that further monetary tightening remains possible. Market expectations increasingly point to another 25-basis-point rate increase by the end of the year.

Inflation data released on Tuesday offered a mixed picture. Japan’s wholesale prices rose 6.8% year-on-year in September, slowing from a 7.6% increase in August and coming in below market expectations. However, import prices surged 24.5%, reflecting the weaker yen's impact and reinforcing concerns about persistent cost pressures.

The contrasting movements in short- and long-dated yields highlighted uncertainty about the monetary policy outlook and the sustainability of the recent decline in longer-term borrowing costs.

Keisuke Tsuruta, a senior bond strategist at Mitsubishi UFJ Morgan Stanley Securities, wrote in a note that the relatively sharp fall in long-term and super-long yields late last week largely represented a rebound from earlier market moves. He cautioned that the decline's sustainability remained uncertain.
