According to the Reuters report, Princeton University economist Markus Brunnermeier warned global central bankers about the potential disruption from widespread AI adoption in financial markets. He outlined scenarios in which AI-powered trading systems could process information faster and more effectively than humans, potentially allowing machines to anticipate central bank decisions and exploit them for profit.

Brunnermeier argued that increasingly sophisticated AI agents could create an imbalance in which financial markets understand central banks better than policymakers understand the markets themselves. He described this as “asymmetric understanding”, suggesting that AI could eventually alter the way financial markets respond to monetary policy.
Transparency could become a challenge
The rapid evolution of AI could also create a dilemma for central banks that have spent decades moving toward greater transparency and clearer communication. The Brunnermeier suggested policymakers could face pressure to become less predictable if highly advanced AI systems begin using their communication to anticipate and trade around policy decisions.
Such a shift would represent a significant reversal from the current approach of central banks, which generally rely on forward guidance and transparent communication to help financial markets understand their policy outlook and reduce uncertainty.
Brunnermeier also raised the possibility of unconventional responses, including separate communication channels for humans and AI systems. He suggested that central banks could potentially need to experiment with ways of communicating that prevent AI agents from gaining an excessive advantage from policymakers' statements.
AI could reshape financial regulation
The economist's concerns extend beyond monetary policy communication.He warned widespread AI deployment could make markets less informative and more volatile, while potentially increasing the risk of manipulation and illicit activity.
If AI systems become dominant participants in financial markets, regulators could face the challenge of overseeing increasingly complex interactions between machines operating at speeds and scales that are difficult for humans to match.
Brunnermeier suggested that regulation may therefore need to prioritize simplicity and robustness so that rules remain effective even as financial technology becomes significantly more sophisticated.
Central banks remain focused on near-term risks
The warnings came as central bankers at Jackson Hole were primarily focused on more immediate questions surrounding AI, financial innovation and the economy.
Discussions at the symposium also examined how stablecoins and distributed-ledger technologies could influence central banking and the broader economy. Policymakers are increasingly assessing how these technologies could affect financial stability, regulation and the transmission of monetary policy.
Boston Fed President Susan Collins also highlighted the need to examine both the opportunities and risks created by AI and financial innovation, particularly with regard to potential increases in illicit financial activity.
Warsh takes a more optimistic view
Fed Chairman Kevin Warsh offered a more positive assessment of AI during his keynote address at the symposium, focusing on its potential to raise productivity and influence the labour market.
According to Reuters, Warsh identified the potential impact of AI on productivity and employment as important questions for monetary policymakers. He described AI as a potentially new factor of production that could have consequences for both the economy and the conduct of monetary policy.
While Brunnermeier acknowledged AI's potential benefits, including stronger risk management and improved oversight, his presentation concentrated on the risks that could emerge if AI systems become dominant forces in financial markets.
The debate highlights a growing challenge for central banks: AI could simultaneously improve economic efficiency and create new vulnerabilities in the financial system. As adoption accelerates, policymakers may increasingly have to balance the technology's productivity benefits against the possibility that increasingly powerful AI agents could fundamentally change how markets interpret and respond to monetary policy.
