VA Tech Wabag shares jump 5% after bagging mega order worth over Rs 1,000 crore

Shares of VA Tech Wabag rallied as much as 5% to their day's high of Rs 1,290 on the BSE on Monday after the company said it has secured a contract from the Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (CMWSSB) to build a looped transmission network under the Chennai Climate Resilient Water Security and Sewerage Project (CCRWSSP) for Greater Chennai City (GCC).

The company has categorised the order as a "mega" contract, indicating that the value is around Rs 1,000 crore. With this win, Wabag’s total order book has crossed Rs 16,300 crore.

The project, funded by the Asian Development Bank, aims to create a city-wide water grid for Chennai. This system is expected to allow flexible routing of water, better pressure management and stronger operational reliability during both normal and emergency situations. The project will be executed through a joint venture, with Wabag acting as the lead partner.


The proposed ring main system will form the backbone of Chennai’s water grid and strengthen the city’s bulk water transmission network. By linking existing and upcoming pumping stations, service reservoirs and key network nodes, the system will allow dynamic balancing of water flows across different zones. It is also expected to reduce dependence on single transmission corridors, improve resilience to supply disruptions and ensure more balanced and reliable water distribution across the city.

Along with the physical infrastructure, the project will also introduce digital monitoring, automated control and performance-based operations and maintenance systems. These features are expected to enable smarter network management and improve the operational capabilities of CMWSSB.

The scope of work includes building bulk transmission pipelines, feeder mains, pumping stations and underground tanks. It will also involve integration with the central SCADA system, along with testing and commissioning of the entire network. The project is scheduled to be completed within 54 months, followed by 10 years of operations and maintenance.

Shailesh Kumar, Chief Executive Officer for the India Cluster, said the project is an important step towards creating a resilient and future-ready water infrastructure for Chennai. He added that the city-wide water grid will improve supply reliability, operational flexibility and climate resilience, while helping strengthen Chennai’s long-term water security through advanced infrastructure and smart network management.
