The Nifty50 index closed 71 points up at 9,859, while Sensex settled 214 points up at 31,497 on Tuesday.

NEW DELHI: The domestic benchmark indices Sensex and Nifty extended gains for a third straight session.

FMCG, autos, metals, pharma and realty sectors contributed most of the gains.

The Nifty50 index closed 71 points up at 9,859, while Sensex settled 214 points up at 31,497 on Tuesday.

Among the gainers in the Nifty50 index, GAIL stood at the top, with gains of over 4 per cent. It was followed by Tata Motors, Aurobindo Pharma, Reliance Industries, Indiabulls Housing Finance, Bharti Infratel and UPL, each gaining over 2 per cent.

Power Grid settled at the bottom in the Nifty index, losing up to 3 per cent. Bharti Airtel, Cipla, Maruti Suzuki, STate Bank of India, Bosch and Larsen & Toubro were the other losers of Tuesday's trade.

Among the sectoral indices, Nifty Metal index stood at the top with gains of 1.22 per cent. Jindal Steel, Hindustan Zinc and APL Apollo Tubes surged up to 7 per cent in the index.

Nifty PSU Bank emerged as the lone loser index on NSE on Tuesday. The index settled 0.62 per cent down at 3,023, with State Bank of India, IDBI Bank and Bank of Baroda as the laggards.

In total, 34 stocks, including GAIL, Bajaj Auto, Ashok Leyland, Avanti Feeds, Britannia Industries, Thomas Cook (India) and TVS Motor Company hit fresh 52-week high on NSE on Tuesday.

On the contrary, 42 stocks such as Ballarpur Industries, Educomp Solutions, Nagarjuna Oil Refinery, Piramal Phytocare, Reliance Communications and Shilpi Cable Technologies hit fresh 52-week lows.
