Harsh Goenka shares thought experiment on Tata Sons portfolio

RPG Enterprises Chairman Harsh Goenka has shared a hypothetical scenario in which Tata Sons could generate up to Rs 82,000 crore in annual income for philanthropy and social good by selling its listed equity portfolio and investing the proceeds in safe instruments.

In a post on X, Goenka pointed out that Tata Sons pays around Rs 4,475 crore in annual dividends. He then outlined a thought experiment involving the company's listed equity portfolio, which he valued at Rs 11.68 lakh crore.

Goenka suggested that if the entire portfolio were sold and the proceeds invested in instruments yielding 6-7% annually, the investment could generate income of around Rs 70,000-82,000 crore a year. He said this income could potentially be made available entirely for philanthropy and social good.

At a 6% annual yield, an investment of Rs 11.68 lakh crore would generate approximately Rs 70,080 crore. At a 7% yield, the annual income would amount to around Rs 81,760 crore, taking the potential figure close to Rs 82,000 crore.

The calculation compares the annual dividend figure of Rs 4,475 crore cited by Goenka with the potential income from investing the proceeds of a hypothetical sale of the listed equity portfolio in instruments offering the assumed returns.

"Tata Sons pays a dividend of around Rs 4,475 crore a year. Suppose its Rs 11.68 lakh crore listed equity portfolio were sold and invested in safe instruments yielding 6-7%, it could generate an annual income of Rs 70,000-82,000 cr, potentially all available for philanthropy and social good," said Goenka.

Goenka, however, made it clear that he was not recommending such a move. "I am certainly not suggesting this. Just a hypothetical thought worth pondering," he wrote in his post.

His remarks were presented as a thought experiment exploring how the proceeds from Tata Sons' listed equity portfolio could potentially generate income for philanthropic purposes, rather than as a proposal to sell the investments.
