Sugar shares up on forecast of lower output

Shares of sugar mills were in the lime light despite of a weak market Thursday, on reports that sugar production in the country will fall by 8 per cent in 2007-08. Lower output would push up sugar prices.

MUMBAI: Shares of sugar mills were in the lime light despite of a weak market Thursday, on reports that sugar production in the country will fall by 8 per cent in 2007-08. Lower output would push up sugar prices.

Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar said Wednesday sugar production this season is likely to be 260 lakh tonne, lower than 283 lakh tonne in 2006-07.

Balrampur Chini was up 9.54 per cent at Rs 113.05, Sakthi Sugar higher by 7.11 per cent at Rs 111.50, Bannari Amman added 6.83 per cent at Rs 1070, Dhampur Sugar Mills was up 5 per cent at Rs 95.60, Shree Renuka climbed 5.08 per cent at Rs 1,250 and Bajaj Hindustan gained 5.32 per cent at Rs 331.50.
