Stock market trends in 2022: PSU bank stocks lead sectoral winners; IT top loser

Nifty has outperformed its global peers with gains of around nearly 3% in the calendar year 2022. However, among sectoral indices, Nifty PSU Bank index remained the top gainer with nearly 54% gains, while Nifty IT index remained the top loser as it fell 27% in CY22. Other than PSU bank, CPSE, FMCG and metal indices also surged.


Here's a list of the best and worst sectoral performers in 2022.

Nifty PSU Bank index was the top-performing sectoral index in the calendar year 2022 with a gain of 53.68%. UCO Bank, Indian Bank, Central Bank, and Bank of Maharashtra were among the top performers in the Nifty PSU Bank pack in CY22.

Nifty CPSE index surged nearly 20% in the calendar year 2022 and is the second-best performing sectoral index in CY22.

Nifty FMCG index rose nearly 18% in CY22. Among Nifty FMCG stocks, Varun Beverages rose 127% and ITC gained 53%, in CY22.

Nifty Bank index gained about 17% in the calendar year 2022.

Nifty Metal index advanced nearly 13% in the calendar year 2022.

Nifty IT index was the top loser among the sectoral indices as it fell 27% in CY22. Among Nifty IT stocks, Wipro, Tech Mahindra and HCL Tech declined 47%, 44% and 22%, respectively.

Nifty Consumer Durables index declined nearly 16% in the calendar year 2022.

Nifty Realty index plunged about 15% in CY22.

Nifty Media index dropped around 14% in the calendar year 2022.

Nifty Pharma index fell over 10% in the calendar year 2022.
