Stock Market Holiday: Is NSE, BSE open or closed for Ganesh Chaturthi today. Check upcoming market holidays

The Indian stock market will remain closed today, September 14, as the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) and the National Stock Exchange (NSE) will be shut for trading on account of Ganesh Chaturthi.

India's largest commodity exchange, the Multi-Commodity Exchange of India (MCX), will remain closed for the first session (9 am to 5 pm) on Monday. Trading will resume in the evening session between 5 pm and 11:30 pm, as per its website. The National Commodity & Derivatives Exchange (NCDEX), meanwhile, will remain closed for the entire day.

Upcoming market holidays

In total, 16 stock market holidays are scheduled for 2026, of which 10 have already passed. April saw two holidays: April 3 (Good Friday) and April 14 (Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Jayanti), while markets were also closed on May 1 on account of Maharashtra Day and May 28 for Bakri Id.


The BSE and NSE will next be closed on October 2 for Mahatma Gandhi Jayanti), followed by October 20 (Dussehra), November 10 (Diwali-Balipratipada), November 24 (Guru Nanak Jayanti), and December 25 (Christmas).

Ganesh Chaturthi 2026

Ganeshotsav will see devotees welcome Lord Ganesha into homes, housing societies and public pandals across Mumbai as they seek Bappa’s blessings. The festival begins with Ganpati Sthapana, during which devotees ceremonially install Lord Ganesha’s idol and perform Pran Pratishtha. This is followed by daily puja, aarti and offerings before the idol is eventually taken for visarjan. While some families immerse the idol after one-and-a-half, three, five or seven days, the biggest farewell takes place on Anant Chaturdashi, September 25, 2026.

Ganesh Chaturthi remains one of Mumbai’s most cherished festivals, bringing families and communities together in devotion and celebration. From Bappa’s arrival at homes and pandals to the emotional farewell on visarjan day, the festival centres around the prayer that Lord Ganesha removes obstacles, brings wisdom and prosperity, and returns again the following year.
