Jain communities worldwide are set to celebrate Mahavir Jayanti today, which marks the 2624th birth anniversary of Lord Mahavira. Banks and post offices across several states are expected to remain closed today.
Indian stock markets will remain closed today on account of Shri Mahavir Jayanti, as BSE and National Stock Exchange (NSE) observe the first out of the two market holidays scheduled for this week.

Today also marks the fifth out of the 16 stock market holidays scheduled for the entire year 2026. Markets will next remain closed on April 3 (Friday) this week to celebrate Good Friday and on April 14 (Tuesday) on Dr. Baba Saheb Ambedkar Jayanti.

Like April, May will also see two market holidays - May 1 on Maharashtra Day and May 28 on account of Bakri Id. Markets will then be closed on June 26 for Muharram, followed by two months with no market holidays.


In the second half of the year, markets will be closed on September 14 for Ganesh Chaturthi, October 2 for Mahatma Gandhi Jayanti, October 20 for Dussehra, November 10 for Diwali-Balipratipada, November 24 for Prakash Gurpurb Sri Guru Nanak Dev and December 25 on account of Christmas, according to the official holiday calendar.

The exchanges may alter any of the above holidays, for which a separate circular shall be issued in advance.

Will MCX be open today?

India's largest commodity exchange, the Multi Commodity Exchange of India (MCX), will remain shut for trading in the first session (9 am to 5 pm) today on account of Shri Mahavir Jayanti. Trading will resume in the evening session between 5 pm and 11:30 pm, as per the schedule on the website. National Commodity & Derivatives Exchange Limited (NCDEX), meanwhile, will remain closed for trading today.

The market holiday comes amid heightened global geopolitical tensions which triggered a massive selloff in markets, with Dalal Street being no exception. This came along with persistent FII selling, macroeconomic worries and rupee's free fall.
