Stock market holiday: Are NSE, BSE shut on Friday for Rakhi? Check full list of upcoming holidays

The Indian stock market will remain open on August 28, with no trading holiday scheduled for Friday despite Raksha Bandhan celebrations in several parts of the country.

Both the BSE and NSE will operate as usual, with trading, clearing and settlement activities continuing normally. No settlement holiday has been announced for the day.

India's largest commodity exchange, the Multi-Commodity Exchange of India (MCX), will also be open in both sessions on Friday. The National Commodity & Derivatives Exchange Limited (NCDEX) will remain open for the entire day.

Upcoming market holidays

In total, 16 stock market holidays were scheduled for 2026, of which 10 have already passed. April saw two holidays - April 3 (Good Friday) and April 14 (Dr B.R. Ambedkar Jayanti), while markets were also closed on May 1 on account of Maharashtra Day and May 28 for Bakri Id. In June, markets were closed on June 26 for Muharram.

The BSE and NSE will next be closed on September 14 for Ganesh Chaturthi, followed by October 2 (Mahatma Gandhi Jayanti), October 20 (Dussehra), November 10 (Diwali-Balipratipada), November 24 (Guru Nanak Jayanti), and December 25 (Christmas).

Rakhi to be celebrated on Friday

Raksha Bandhan, also known as Rakhi, is an auspicious festival celebrated annually during the Shravana month on the full moon day, or Purnima. The festival celebrates the bond shared between brothers and sisters.

On this occasion, sisters tie the sacred thread, Rakhi, around their brothers’ wrists and pray for their health, happiness and prosperity. Brothers, in turn, promise to stand by and protect their sisters through the different challenges and stages of life.

According to Drik Panchang, Raksha Bandhan 2026 will be celebrated on Friday. In New Delhi, the auspicious Rakhi-tying muhurat will be from 5:57 am to 9:48 am on August 28, giving families more than three and a half hours to perform the ceremony and celebrate the festival together.
