Mumbai: Non-resident Indians will soon be able to make payments via the united payments interface (UPI) without having an Indian mobile number. A recent circular from the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has asked all members to allow non-residents having non-residential external and non- resident ordinary accounts and carrying international mobile numbers to get onboarded and transact through UPI. To begin with, NRIs from the US, UK, UAE, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Hong Kong, Canada, Australia, Oman and Qatar can transact on the UPI platform.

"We have been receiving requirements from ecosystem with regard to NRI accounts and other permissible accounts having international numbers to be allowed to transact in UPI," said the NPCI circular addressed to all members participating in UPI. "Member banks have to ensure that accounts are only allowed as per the FEMA regulations."
