MTNL shares climb 2% on 3G launch
MTNL shares edged higher Thursday as the state-run telecom firm debuts its 3G, or third generation, phone services.
MTNL plans to offer the high-speed data mobile phone service free to its high-spending mobile customers initially for a period of two months on a trial basis, according to media reports. The service is expected to be launched by the Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, during the Indian Telecom Summit in New Delhi.
It will launch the service in Delhi initially followed by Mumbai in two months. The network in Delhi, however, is not fully complete yet. The service will be restricted initially to the New Delhi Municipal Corporation area and National Capital Region of Gurgaon.
At 10:30 am, the stock was up 2.59 per cent at Rs 77.15 after climbing to a high of Rs 77.90 in early trade.
