LIC’s holding in Trent gained sharply in value as the retailer’s strong Q2 update triggered a sharp rally.
Trent shares surged to an intraday high of Rs 2,909 apiece on NSE, with the stock on track to record the sharpest single-day surge since February 2024. The sharp gains added more than Rs 17,540 crore to the market capitalisation of the Tata Group’s retail arm.
Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) held a little over 3% stake in Trent at the end of the April-June quarter of the ongoing financial year 2027, according to data on the company’s shareholding pattern on exchanges.
At the day’s high of Rs 2,909 apiece, LIC's stake in Trent would be worth more than Rs 4,695 crore. This implies a notional profit of over Rs 531 crore in just one session.

It is important to note that it is a notional profit, as there is no indication that the insurance behemoth is selling shares of Trent today to record the gains. The sharp rally has simply increased the value of its holding in the company.
Trent shareholding pattern
Apart from LIC, SBI Life Insurance Company holds around 2% stake in Trent. Among the mutual funds, ICICI Prudential Balanced Advantage Fund, Nippon India Large Cap Fund, SBI Nifty 50 ETF and UTI Nifty 50 ETF hold 1-2.5% stake in the company.Promoter Tata Sons is the largest shareholder, owning more than 32% stake in Trent at the end of the first quarter of FY27. Tata Investment Corp meanwhile held over 4% stake. Around 5 lakh retail shareholders own over 13% stake in the company.
Trent Q2 business update
Trent on Monday reported a 23% year-on-year increase in standalone revenue from operations to Rs 5,788 crore for the April-September quarter of FY27, compared with Rs 4,724 crore a year earlier. During the quarter, Trent opened its 1,000th Zudio store, marking a key milestone for the fashion and lifestyle retailer. It overall added 10 Westside stores and 17 Zudio stores on a net basis. As of September 30, 2026, Trent’s portfolio stood at 1,342 stores across Westside, Zudio and other lifestyle brands, as per the exchange filing.
