Is the stock market open on January 1?

The Indian stock market will be open today on Wednesday, January 1, 2025, as per the official calendar released by the BSE and NSE India. All segments, including equity, derivatives, and SLB, will be operational.

However, due to New Year’s Day, the Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX) will remain open for the morning session but will close for the evening session at 5 pm.

The equity segment of the markets operates on weekdays, excluding Saturdays, Sundays, and any holidays declared by the Exchange in advance.


According to the NSE and BSE holiday calendars, the markets will observe 14 trading holidays in the upcoming calendar year, compared to 16 in the current year.

The next trading holiday will be Wednesday, February 26, on account of Mahashivratri. It is also important to note that certain holidays, such as Republic Day on January 26, coincide with weekends in 2025.

Amid thin year-end volumes, Indian benchmark equity indices Sensex and Nifty50 opened in the red for the second consecutive session on the last trading day of 2024, dragged by IT stocks and tracking other Asian peers as elevated U.S. Treasury yields continue to weigh on emerging markets.

The BSE Sensex was trading 251 points, or 0.32%, lower at 77,998. The Nifty50 was down 53 points, or 0.22%, trading at 23,597 around 12:30 pm.
