Is the stock market open on January 1?
As per the NSE and BSE holiday calendars, the markets will have 14 trading holidays in the upcoming year, down from 16 in the current year. The next trading holiday will be Wednesday, February 26, in observance of Mahashivratri.

However, due to New Year’s Day, the Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX) will remain open for the morning session but will close for the evening session at 5 pm.
The equity segment of the markets operates on weekdays, excluding Saturdays, Sundays, and any holidays declared by the Exchange in advance.
According to the NSE and BSE holiday calendars, the markets will observe 14 trading holidays in the upcoming calendar year, compared to 16 in the current year.
The next trading holiday will be Wednesday, February 26, on account of Mahashivratri. It is also important to note that certain holidays, such as Republic Day on January 26, coincide with weekends in 2025.

The BSE Sensex was trading 251 points, or 0.32%, lower at 77,998. The Nifty50 was down 53 points, or 0.22%, trading at 23,597 around 12:30 pm.
